Every Year in hip-hop music, there are many awards that honor the artists for their record sales in the hip-hop music category. The categories in these various music awards show doesn't show the contribution of hip-hop artists who portray a positive image to the public. For example, let us take a look at the 2004 Source Hip-Hop Awards categories. The categories range from Artists of the Year, Group of the Year, Fat Tape Song of the Year, Remixes of the Year, Collaborations of the Year, etc. I don't see any single category that read Positive Image, Role Model of the Year, and Artist Who Contribute Most to Community, etc. The category name is not important but the idea behind the category is very important.

These categories should be mandatory for three reasons. First, it will dispel the myth that hip-hop music and artists only involve in criminal or morally bankrupt acts. Second, it provides the younger, more impressionable listening audience a different image of hip-hop culture. Last, but not least, it can create an action plan whereby community leaders or politicians can have a positive view on the artists' message and create legislations that can assist the community. |

Let's look at the three points I have outlined in more details. I believe that having either one or various categories showing hip-hop music in a more positive light not only benefits the artists but the music listening public. Hip-Hop culture has grown to be a massive economic and cultural part of the American landscape. Hip-Hop artists are predominantly African-Americans or minorities. It is in the minorities' communities' interest
|
to portray us positively without sacrificing artistic expressions. Most of the public audiences do not understand Hip-Hop culture and what they see on television makes them assume that all minorities act in the same manner or have the same tendencies. Whether it is fixation with money, girls or violent behavior. Even though the hip-hop artist might not get any backlash from their music, their minority listening audience might get the brunt of the negative sentiments. This is why it is critical to have a category so when the entire public audience watches music awards, they can see the benefits and impacts positive hip-hop music has given to the community it serves. |
